Ashcombe Press

A jobbing letterpress shop that had been trading for eleven years under three different names at once. One name, one set of marks, and a stationery system that can be set by hand.

Start a project £6,400 — a complete identity in six weeks

Wood type massed in a compositor’s frame, seen from above.
Printed at grade 1.85, baked into the file.

Ashcombe had a sign, a rubber stamp and an invoice template, and none of the three agreed on what the shop was called. The work was not a rebrand so much as a decision, taken once, and then applied everywhere it needed to be.

The wordmark is drawn to be cut in wood at 12 line and set in metal below that, so the shop can print its own identity on its own presses without commissioning anything from anyone. The colour is the ink they already had most of.

A type case of metal sorts in their compartments.
Loose metal type spilled across a bench beside a composing stick.
A hand-drawn alphabet, capitals and lowercase, ruled out on paper.
