Marlow Editions

A twelve-title series of reissued field guides. One grid, one type size, and a cover system that has to survive titles between one and nine words long.

A stack of opened books fanned so the page edges make a curve.
Printed at grade 1.85, baked into the file.

The brief was a series, not twelve books. The constraint that did the work was the spine: at 18mm the longest title has to set on one line at the same size as the shortest, which fixes the type before anything else is decided.

Inside, the grid is a single measure with a wide outer margin for the plates, because a field guide is read standing up with one thumb holding it open.

A large printed sheet lifted clear of the pile by two hands.
Ink rollers on a proofing press charged with a single ink.
